But, what you should say might not be so obvious. It can be hard to know how to verbally make a persuasive case for an employer to hire you. Its also easy to get caught up in practicing interview questions and answers and completely forget to review the basic ideas you should express in order to make a great first impression on your interviewer. What to Say During a Job Interview Weve done the work for you and compiled a list of the most effective expressions to use in an interview. However, you should be sure to use common sense when incorporating these statements in your interview. Dont feel like you have to hit every single one in fact, that might sound a little silly. You dont want to sound like a robot spouting out pre-planned statements that dont fit within the context of a broader conversation. Instead, keep these in your back pocket to incorporate whenever it makes sense. Keep in mind that you shouldnt repeat these statements verbatim, or in the order, they are listed. Instead, use your own words to demonstrate the core idea and insert each thought tactfully, so the conversation flows naturally. Here are some of the things you should say in an interview. 16 Phrases to Use During a Job Interview At the Beginning of the Interview At the beginning of the interview, your goal is to make a strong first impression on the interviewer. Soichiro Honda
Soichiro Honda Soichiro Honda Soichiro HondaSoichiro Honda (1906 1991), the founder and president of the Honda Motor Company, got his start at his fathers bicycle repair shop. As a child, he spent hours fixing bikes and learning from his father, who welches also a blacksmith.Honda welches born on November 17, 1906, in Japans Shizuoka prefecture, where, given that bicycles were only just starting to become popular, Hondas glimpse of a Model T one day became a life-changing vorstellung I could not understand how it could move under its own power. And when it had driven past me, without even thinking why, I found myself chasing it down the road as far as I could run. In 1922, that love of automobiles inspired him to leave home at age 15 to apprentice at Art Shokai, an automobile repair shop in Tokyo. The shops owner saw in Honda a hard worker processing technical expertise unusual in one with only an elementary school education.Sochiro Honda has more than 100 patents to his name, inclu ding new engine designs for both motorcycles and automobiles. At Art Shokai...the Old Man learned so much by doing real work with real machines, said Kihachiro Kawashima, who succeeded Honda at the Honda Motor Company upon his 1973 retirement. He didnt just have theoretical knowledgehe was an expert at all sorts of practical tasks like welding and forging. Those of us who had only studied the subject on paper from an academic standpoint just couldnt compete. In 1928, Honda completed his apprenticeship and opened a branch of Art Shokai in Hamamatsu, with his new wife Sachi serving as bookkeeper and cook for the staff. Honda began building everything from dump trucks and a repair lift for cars to racing cars using old airplane engines, and began to dream of expanding into manufacturing. But his investors, loathe to tamper with a profitable business model, refused to back him.Undeterred, in 1936, Honda started a separate company, Tokai Seiki Heavy Industry, where after putting in a full day at Art Shokai, he made piston rings at night. Though his first order of piston rings, made for Toyota, was rejected, Honda refined the processone of the 100 patents he would receive would be for piston designand his business, which became a 2,000-employee supplier of parts for Toyota and Nakajima Aircraft, among other companies.Honda was a maverick whose best ideas emerged from the most pressing constraints. During World War II, when the Ministry of Munitions took control of Tokai Seiki, he developed a technique for mass-producing wooden airplane propellers for the war effort that turned out two propellers every half hour as opposed to the week it previously took for one propeller to be hand carved manually. And after the war, with gasoline scarce, Honda, opened the Honda Technical Research Institute, where he built small2-stroke, 50-cc modified engines that could be attached to bicycles, like the one he used to get around post-war Tokyo. In 1949, the Honda Motor Company, Ltd., r eleased the first Dream Type-D motorized bicycle, made of pressed steel, because quality steel pipe was hard to come by, and painted maroon, a stylistic departure from the black paint of other motorcycles on the road. It was an immediate hit with the Japanese public. In 1953, the Honda C-100, followed, and it was that fuel-efficient diminutive bike that in 1959 became the worlds biggest selling motorcycle. But profit wasnt Hondas only motive. In March 1954, he informed employees that he had his sights on the Isle of Man Tourist Trophy, the most prestigious motorcycle race in the world Since I was a small child, one of my dreams has been to compete in motor vehicle races all over the world with a vehicle of my own making. Noting that never before had a Japanese entered the race with a made-in-Japan motorcycle, Honda enlisted his workers in the creation of a 250-cc (medium class) racer capable of clocking 180 km/hr, a project that would bring together the full strength of Honda Motor Co. . The future of Honda Motor Co. depends on this, and the burden rests on your shoulders.Five years later, Honda and his workers made headway, when a team of Honda 250 ccs finished 6th, 7th, 8th and 11th in the Isle of Man 125-cc light-weight class, and won the Manufacturers Team Award. In Germany in 1961, a 250-cc Honda became the first Japanese bike to come in first in a World GP event.Honda introduced the Honda Dream in 1959.In September 1959, an American Honda Motor Company storefront in Los Angles introduced the Honda Dream, the first of several small bikes that, by 1964, were selling 100,000 a month globally. But Honda, never one to rest on his laurels, shifted gears again and jumped into the Japanese auto industrydespite a Japanese Ministry of International Trade and Industry ban on new car companies.Government officials ... become an obstacle when you try to do something new, he once said. Nevertheless, in 1963, Honda began producing the lightweight fuel-efficient cars in Japan that were the precursors to the 2-cylinder N600 sedan that would hit American shores in 1969. 1971s Z600 coupe followed and then in 1973, the Honda Motor Company introduced the Honda Civic hatchback. But it was with the Compound Vortex Controlled Combustion Engine (CVCC)and the energy crisis of the mid-1970sthat Honda made history. An inventive technical response to market conditions, the CVCCloaded Civic complied with new stringent U.S. exhaust emission standards without a catalytic converter, something other car companies said couldnt be done. The Civic was an immediate hit, and from 1972 to 1974 it won the Car of the Year Japan award. In 1979, Honda opened its first U.S. plant.By then, Honda was all but retired, largely devoting himself to public service. He received the Order of the Sacred Treasure, first class, the highest honor bestowed by Japans emperor. In 1980, the year Honda Motor Company became the worlds third largest automaker, ASME established the Soichiro Honda Medal in recognition of Mr. Hondas exemplary achievements in the field of personal transportation. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1989, taking his place beside Henry Ford, Walter Chrysler, Alfred Sloane of General Motors and Karl Benz. Honda died on August 5, 1991 from liver failure, at age 84. His wife, Sachi, and three children survived him.Marion Hart is an independent writer.I could not understand how it the Model T could move under its own power. And when it had driven past me, without even thinking why, I found myself chasing it down the road as far as I could run.Soichiro Honda
These are scientifically-proven ways to New Years resolutions stick
These are scientifically-proven ways to New Years resolutions stick These are scientifically-proven ways to New Years resolutions stick As the year comes to a close, many of us start to plan lofty New Yearâs resolutions. Next year, we tell ourselves, will be the year of eating healthier, sleeping more, and finally following through on that idea. But then these shiny new resolutions fall apart under the weight of logistics and the frustration over a lack of progress. We go back to stress snacking and getting five hours of sleep. That idea in the back of our heads stays an idea. But there are everyday, scientifically-proven actions you can take to avoid this sad fate and make sure your resolution sticks into a habit.Hereâs how:1) Break your plan down into manageable partsYou begin with making your resolution approachable instead of insurmountable. That happens when you break down your big-picture plans into manageable bites that will not overwhelm you and slow down your momentum. Management consultant Michelle Bryant firmly believes that any plan can be broken down into 10-minute increments, or else it should be de legated to someone else.Tips blog Dumb Little Man suggests asking yourself âWhat are its component parts? What will be the real effort required?â Then you start with the easiest answer to complete from these questions. That way you get your momentum going quickly.2) Use if-then planningReframing your plan into if-then statements helps you build one-time actions into a behavioral chain reaction that becomes a habit, studies have found. One study on habit formation suggested that âlinking behaviors to work-day cues worked well due to their stability and predictabilityâ The studyâs participants who had the most success with their goals used the built-in rhythms of their workday to keep them accountable. They didnât just have a goal, they had a realistic plan designed around their jobs. They worked out when they finished their jobs on Mondays. They would not eat breakfast until they arrived at work.Social psychologist Heidi Grant Halvorson argues that if-then thinking is eff ective because the language of contingencies is how our brains reason. âHuman beings are particularly good at encoding and remembering information in âIf X, then Yâ terms, and using these contingencies to guide our behavior, often below our awareness,â she writes. To put this into practice, make a point to integrate your plan into your existing routine. Instead of thinking, âI will start writing my ambitious novel today,â you add contextual cues of where and when you will write to make that statement into a fortified habit: âWhen I arrive home from work, I will write for an hour.â If it is 11 p.m., then I will power off my laptop and go to sleep.3) Build the best environment for your new routineIf your everyday routine is not conducive to completing your new resolution, you need to change your environment until it becomes so. Part of tackling any new resolution is clearing your mind of any unhelpful distractions in your goalâs path.In a series of five experiments, a ssociate business professor Kathleen Vohs found that we have a limited amount of decisions we can make each day before we experience psychological âdecision fatigue,â even if the choices are fun or small, even if we get unlimited time to make the decisions. To prevent decision fatigue over our resolutions, we need to decide what we care to think about and what we can automate and delegate. This is why fitness experts suggest laying out your workout clothes the night before or even wearing these clothes to bed. That way, youâve eliminated one more excuse as to why you cannot wake up early in the morning to exercise. As actor Terry Crews advises people who want to build his exercise habit, âTreat the gym like a spaâ¦Go to the gym, donât even work out. Just GO. Because the habit of going to the gym is more important than the work out.âWe are creatures who thrive on the structure of a routine. When you are starting out a new resolution, making your goal part of your routine i s more important to your goalâs success than the immediate results you may see. Itâs how you turn a resolution in the back of your head into a habit you can see the results of every day.

5 Resume Writing Tips for Millennials
5 Resume Writing Tips for Millennials 5 Resume Writing Tips for Millennials 0Resumes are now changing to reflect the value and qualities of the candidate seeking a job. The way to present yourself is quite different compared to how your parents wrote resumes. New and established professionals need to evaluate their resumes, and below are five resume writing tips to get you started. Below are some key characteristics that differentiate millennialsâ (or generation Y) resumes from generation X. Additionally, you will find some notes that will assist you in setting yourself apart from other candidates for the ever-changing and saturated job market. Here are five resume writing tips for millennials! Presenting the Value Statement You may be looking back to your high school resume and thinking, âOh, you mean an objective statement right?â No. These are two very different things. An objective statement is an outdated format. Resumes are now designed to provide a value statement- normally one or two small paragraphs- that illustrates a candidateâs best attributes and skills, and then validates them in some way. This shows the prospective employer what the candidate is offering the company rather than what the candidate wants from the job they are applying to- a writing style often found in gen X resumes. No Fluff Resumes that are written in a valued-oriented manner is a key component to making a gen Y candidate unique from the others. Content must be less task-based and more achievement-based, as employers want to know what you can provide for them/their company, and not what you want to get out of a job. Gen X resumes were often written or presented in a way that illustrated a summary of qualifications or soft skills such as: I am very goal-oriented, a hard-worker, and I have excellent communication skills. That is great, but, gen Y resumes have to provide proof of those important qualities. Project Work and Achievements You can highlight your project work to create a more achievement-based resume. Project work can be anything from important- but relevant- projects you completed in school, during an internship, or especially if you have already started working in the field. Projects are also equivalent to achievements because they validate your skills and task-based information. But remember, depending on the job you are applying for, make sure the projects are relevant or provide value to the company. Relevance Originally, gen X resumes illustrated all of the candidateâs experience. An individual may be applying for an office administration job, but will list all of their experience including their summer high school jobs. Your roles as a mechanic (or whatever) do not provide relevant or valuable skills to a sales representative role. To continue in following this example, if you have mechanic and sales experience, take out the mechanic experience so you can shift the focus to your sales experience and emphasize its related achievements. The employer is going to want to see how much money you can make, not if you can fix their car. This tends to worry some because their experience may be limited. If that is case, you should still try to emphasize the relevant experience first. Then to show longevity in your career you can pull out skills from your less relevant jobs that may still provide value to the job you are applying for. Did you provide customers great service while fixing their car s? Great! That is a relevant trait that is applicable to sales. Staying Simple This point isnât as relevant to gen X resumes, but it has become an emerging trend for millennials. Many candidates attempt to set themselves apart from the crowd by creating creative resumes that have intricate designs with images and infographics. While this may look nice on paper, donât do it. Since the majority of job applications are completed online (a practice much less common or non-existent for gen X), most resumes are processed through an HRâs Applicant Tracking System (ATS). So, when you apply for a job online, any images, graphics, etc. will get distorted because the system converts the file into an ASCII, or all text format. Your resume will then look wonky, and some crucial information may be eliminated completely. Plus, HR staff have to look at hundreds of resumes. If they come across a wonky looking resume thatâs missing information, they wonât even look at it. Essentially in a nutshell, a successful resume requires value-oriented content that indicates what you can offer the employer- not the other way around- as well as information that is project/achievement-based and presented in a clear format with no âfluffâ content. Finally, when outlining your experience and achievements, make sure the information is relevant and straight to the point to illustrate significance- so donât get too fancy with overly formal writing. Army Major General - Rank and Definition
Army Major General - Rank and Definition Army Major General - Rank and Definition In the Armys hierarchy, major general ranks below lieutenant general but above brigadier general, making the position third from the top. Sometimes referred to as two-star generals, major generals wear an insignia on their shoulders bearing two stars. The rank was first established by the Army in 1775 at its inception, but was abolished in 1802. The rank of major general was restored not long after, ahead of the War of 1812. Army Major General Explained The rank of major general is a permanent one, and the highest possible rank an officer can achieve during peacetime. Any ranks above major general are considered temporary and linked to a given role, such as commanding a division during wartime. The Armys major general is the equivalent rank to a rear admiral in the Navy or Coast Guard. Responsibilities of an Army Major General Major generals serve as commanders of divisions, which have between 10,000 and 16,000 soldiers. They perform major tactical operations and conduct sustained battles and engagements. There are 10 divisions in the active Army and eight in the Reserves/National Guard. Two-star generals also serve as high-level officers at major commands and the Pentagon. How to Become an Army Major General Fewer than one half of one percent of commissioned officers make it to the top three ranks. This is an Army job for experienced officers who have shown bravery and valor and are considered outstanding leaders. Promotions occur as vacancies open up within commissioned officer ranks. Boards composed of senior officers determine which officers are promoted based on achievement, years of service and number of open positions. The Secretary of Defense convenes the selection boards every year to make decisions for ranks higher than O-2 (first lieutenant). The president nominates officers for the rank of major general, and the U.S. Senate must confirm the appointment before it is official. When a major general retires, dies while in the line of duty or loses the rank for some other reason, the president suggests a replacement from a list of nominees provided in consultation with the Secretary of Defense and Joint Chiefs of Staff. Retiring as Army Major General The mandatory retirement age for a major general is 62, but it can be pushed to 64 in some cases. An Army major general must retire from the position five years after being promoted to that rank, or after 35 years of service, whichever comes first. If a major general is promoted to a higher temporary rank, he or she is allowed to retire at that rank, even if they return to major general before retiring. Removing an Army Major General's Rank Demotions can result from conduct unbecoming an officer, such as adultery, or infractions such as dereliction of duty. It is rare for general officers to be stripped of their stars; such a punishment is usually meted out only to those facing serious charges. For example, Maj. Gen. Samuel W. Koster, the most senior official implicated in the My Lai massacre during the Vietnam War, lost his rank.

Signs That Its Time for You to Get a New Job - The Muse
Signs That Its Time for You to Get a New Job - The Muse Signs That Its Time for You to Get a New Job Youâve been doing the same tasks for as long as you can remember. Youâve had the same boss- and bossâ boss- the whole time youâve been at the company. New skills? New responsibilities? New company initiatives? Canât really name any off the top of your head. In fact, youâre starting to feel like things are a little stalled. I know. You have a good job. You work for an interesting company, and you like your boss and co-workers. And I also know that, sometimes, sticking with the status quo is exactly what you want out of your career. But, if itâs important to you to continue growing and advancing in your professional life, itâs time to pay attention to how your job is affecting your career as a whole. And, more importantly, to recognize these signs that tell you when it might be at a standstill. 1. The Only Way You Can Move Up Is if Your Boss Retires Or, you know, gets hit by a bus Regina George-style. If youâre in one of those organizations with a rigid structure where everyone moves up the same ladder- and the rung ahead of you wonât be vacated anytime soon- then a promotion or advancement probably isnât on the horizon for you. If this is the case, you can (and should) talk to your supervisor about what your options are. Could you at least take on some new responsibilities? Or, if there isnât an opportunity for you in your current department, maybe there is in another. Of course, if youâve done that, and thereâs still no hope of movement, thereâs nowhere for you to go but out. You can also avoid this dilemma in your next position by asking questions like this during interviews: âHow do employees grow and develop their careers here?â or âWhat does a typical career path at your company look like?â 2. You Get Passed Over for a Promotion More Than Once Whatever the reason behind this might be, the fact is something or someone is preventing you from moving up in your current organization. Before packing up your things, do take the time to sit down your manager and ask why this happened again. Perhaps itâs something youâre doing and youâre unwittingly self-sabotaging- if thatâs the case, you have something to work on. But if no oneâs giving you a clear reason on why you got passed over, itâs likely that not much is going to change in the future. 3. Your Company Is Cutting Back During the recession, there wasnât much you could do about your employer tightening its belt- everyone else was doing the same thing. But now, with a healthier economy, you have more options, and you should pay attention if your company seems to be cutting back. You donât even necessarily need to be seeing mass layoffs or salary freezes. Just look out for signs that business isnât really growing, like dwindling job openings or the fact that every major player in your industry is moving in a similar direction- while yours remains stagnant. If growth really is slowing down, pretty soon youâre going to be in that first âsituationâ I mentioned. 4. Your Whole Industry Is Shrinking This one requires taking a step back. The realization that the industry youâve built your career in is slowly disappearing is not one that goes over well for many people. But the earlier you catch on to it, the better off youâll be. Yes, itâs a tough pill to swallow, but itâs better to know now, rather than be blindsided later on. The good news? Plenty of people change careers. You can prepare by starting to think about what (else) youâd like to do with your life. What do you love about your job now? What are some things youâve always been interested in? What are some interesting jobs youâve seen friends and colleagues have? Take those answers and see what other fields utilize those skills and talents. Once youâve recognized that thereâs a problem, the next step is to do something about it. (Spoiler alert: It probably involves looking for a new job.) If youâre not quite ready for that, a good first step is doing some networking to see whatâs out there. Then, once you get to the point you know you need to make a change, youâll be in a good position to launch right into job search mode. Photo of traffic jam courtesy of Shutterstock.

Study An orange a day keeps the bad vision at bay
Study An orange a day keeps the bad vision at bay Study An orange a day keeps the bad vision at bay If you do not want your world to become a blurry smear, you may want to read this. There is one fruit proven to boost your sight and prevent loss of vision - an orange. Start chopping up those orange slices. In a 15-year study of 2,000 Australian adults aged over 50, researchers found that an orange a day was helpful at keeping macular degeneration, or the disease that causes loss of vision, at bay.A serving of oranges lowered risk of eye diseaseThe study found that participants who had a simple serving of oranges a day reduced their risk of getting age-related macular degeneration 15 years later by more than 60%. The flavonoids, or the chemicals that give oranges their bright color, appeared to be particularly helpful at preventing the eye disease. Interestingly, oranges had superior eye benefits than other foods that had flavonoids like apples.âFlavonoids are powerful antioxidants found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and they have important anti-inflammatory benefits for th e immune system,â Bamini Gopinath, the studyâs lead author, said. âWe examined common foods that contain flavonoids such as tea, apples, red wine and oranges. Significantly, the data did not show a relationship between other food sources protecting the eyes against the disease.âTo save your eyes in the future, prevention can start with a cup of squeezed orange juice.

Improve the Desktop Support Hiring Process
Improve the Desktop Support Hiring Process Improve the Desktop Support Hiring Process Skilled desktop support staff are in high demand, and they donât stay on the job market long. To land your top candidate, you need to streamline your hiring process. But moving quickly doesnât mean acting hastily. Here are some ways to minimize the time it takes to evaluate candidates and make good new hires. Advertise right If your job posting is too generic, youâll lose time wading through resumes from people who are the wrong fit. But if the ad has too many required items, youâll discourage otherwise skilled candidates from applying. To get that Goldilocks pool of applicants, you need the just-right job posting, which comes from a strong job description. Carefully separate the expertise your ideal candidate must have and attributes that are just nice to have. For example, donât hesitate to stipulate a degree, but include in the posting that youâre willing to accept as a substitute relevant work experience for the right person. And donât forget the soft skills necessary in desktop support positions, especially superb customer service and clear and friendly communication. If you have a one-off project that you need help with, consider working with a staffing agency specializing in placing IT candidates to fill positions on a contract basis. An example would be finding someone to help with transitioning your organization from Windows 7 to Windows 8. And if the contractor turns out to be a good fit within your company, you can safely extend him a full-time offer for another position without having to worry about making a bad hire since youâve had time to evaluate his performance on the job. Have a detailed plan A mistake that some organizations make is not having a hiring strategy. Before you post a job ad, you should know how you plan to move applicants through the hiring process. Here are some items to consider: Number of interviews: Will there be a phone screening? If so, who will conduct them? How many in-person rounds will there be? A panel interview with several team members is usually more efficient than a series of one-on-ones. Interview questions: Will each member of the interview committee be responsible for coming up with his or her own questions, or will you decide as a team? Skills test, such as preparing a broken PC and asking applicants to diagnose or fix it. Reference checks/due diligence: How many references will you ask for and check? Who will be responsible for this task, the human resources manager or the new hireâs supervisor? Will this position require a background check or drug test? Hiring decision: How will the top candidate be decided on? Job offer: Who will have the authority for extending the job offer and, if necessary, negotiating salary? By tapping and developing in-house staff, you already know that they fit in your corporate culture. Promoting from within is also a great way to retain star employees. If promising staff express interest in more responsibilities and leadership roles, donât risk losing those motivated workers to another company. Different types of skills for job seekers Where and how to incorporate skills on a job application Top 50+ skills hiring managers want to see on your resume Fastest ways to gain new skills to get hired What Are Skills? Why Are Skills Important? According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a skill is: âthe ability to use ones knowledge effectively and readily in execution or performanceâ âa learned power of doing something competently: a developed aptitude or abilityâ When it comes to job hunting, your skills are what set you apart. Every human on earth has a set of skills that is unique to them. Likewise, every professional position has a unique set of skills that is required for performing the job. Finding the perfect alignment between these two ideas is the key goal for every hiring manager. If a hiring manager finds someone that already possesses the skills needed for their job, they wonât have to spend so much time and money on training. It also means that their new employee will be able to pull their own weight more quickly, providing a quicker return on their hiring investment. But how do hiring managers know who has what it takes to perform well on the job? The first and most important place hiring managers look is at your resume. On average, a hiring manager spends 6 seconds reviewing a resume and during that time they are scanning the pages to see if the skills required for the job jump out at them. If they find what they are looking for, you get called in for an interview. If they donât quickly see what they are looking for, your resume will most likely be discarded. As a job seeker, it is your responsibility to make sure you know what skills hiring managers are looking for. Once you identify those skills, it is also your responsibility to make sure those relevant skills are incorporated into your resume in a way that stands out. If you do these two things accurately, you will be the one getting called in for an interview and will be that much closer to landing a new job. Types of Professional Skills (Real Resume Examples) Skills can be broken down into four main categories: Hard skills Soft skills Transferable skills Job-related skills. Before you start writing your own list of skills, letâs go through each of these skill categories to see what the difference between them is. Hard Skills vs Soft Skills Hard skills are specific, teachable, and tangible. They can be measured and tested using assignments and assessments. Hard skills are learned, either through on-the-job training or through school, rather than coming naturally. Examples of hard skills for a resume: Statistics Computer Programming Accounting Carpentry Teaching Mechanical Engineering Yoga Digital Marketing Sales Soft skills are intangible and are harder to measure. They are personality traits and interpersonal skills that come naturally to humans, rather than being learned through school. People are born with soft skills. These soft skills grow and develop over time from your upbringing, education, and experiences. Examples of soft skills: Punctual Hardworking Sociable Ethical Process-Oriented Strong Communication Leadership Time Management Positive Attitude Contrary to popular belief, hiring managers often care more about soft skills than hard skills, though both hard and soft skills contribute to your appeal as a candidate. Hard skills, such as computer programming or accounting, can be taught using a combination of curriculum and hands-on practice. Whereas soft skills, such as a positive attitude or punctuality, are harder to teach. Regardless of your background, hiring managers are usually flexible with teaching you the hard skills needed for their job, as long as you already have the right attitude along with the aptitude to learn. Transferable Skills vs Job-Related Skills Transferable skills can be carried with you from one job to the other. These skills can be a hard skill or soft skill, as long as they can be used in any type of role, regardless of the industry, company, or position. Examples of transferable skills: Microsoft Word Customer Service Phone Etiquette Organization Professionalism Attention-To-Detail Job-related skills are usually always hard skills. These job-related skills are specific to a certain type of role or position. Examples of job-related skills: Java Programming Excel Pivot Tables Project Management Lifecycle Basic Life Support Fine Dining Table Service Retail POS Systems How And Where To List Skills On Your Resume Skills should be included throughout your resume, rather than confined to one area. While scanning your resume, hiring managers will be looking over each resume section, starting with the top. Because of how people read resumes, you need to make sure they see your skills immediately. Guarantee hiring managers will see your skills by listing them in four key areas of your resume: Resume header Professional summary Summary of skills Work Experience section If you are writing a resume from scratch, try using this free and easy-to-use resume builder from Resume.com. The sections and formatting are already created for you, so all you need to worry about is filling in the blanks to finish a free printable resume. 1. Resume Header At the top of your resume, directly below your name, write your job title along with the three most relevant skills you have as a candidate. This is the first section hiring managers will be reading, so it is important to draw their attention using bold and large lettering. If youâre using this resume builder, the âBlue Skiesâ, âThree Blocks Digitalâ, and âvan Decoâ resume templates already have a header section included, which will make finishing your resume easier. When writing your header, it is crucial that you customize the job title and skills to each job youâre applying for. Your job application needs to be consistent you can read more about consistency in this article. For example, if you write Java Developer in your resume header, but are applying for a .NET Developer position, a huge red flag will go up for the hiring manager. When writing your top three skills in your header, make sure they align with the required skills listed in the job posting. If youâre applying for a job at a large company or corporation, or youâre applying through a job board, itâs helpful to keep applicant tracking systems (ATS) in mind. Make sure your resume makes it past ATS software by listing your skills using the same wording as the job posting. Example of skills in the resume header: 2. Professional Summary Below your header and contact information, you will have a professional summary section. A professional summary used to be called an âobjectiveâ, but the modern resume writing approach is to replace your objective with a professional summary section. Your professional summary should give an overview of your background, years of experience, and the top skills that set you apart. The skills in your professional summary should be written in sentence form, rather than listed out. If using the resume builder, the âMy Employmentâ, âApple Greenâ, and âSide Panelâ resume templates have professional summary sections that are sure to draw attention to your most relevant skills. Example of skills in the professional summary of a resume: 3. Summary of Skills Below your professional summary, include a âsummary of skillsâ section. Alternative titles for this section could be âcore competenciesâ, âkey skillsâ, âprofessional skillsâ, or ârelevant skillsâ. If you have less than 10 skills, you can list them out in columns. Summary of skills resume example (less than 10 professional skills) : If you have more than 10 skills, you should break them down into categories. Summary of skills resume example (more than 10 professional skills) : See alsoHow to List Education on a Resume (Examples) For your skills section, your skills should be listed, rather than written out in sentence form. This formatting choice helps hiring managers to pick out the key words quickly, which they can read about in more detail in the experience section after. 4. Experience Section The âexperienceâ section usually comes after your summary of skills on a resume. Depending on your background, this could also be called âprofessional experienceâ, âwork experienceâ, or ârelevant experienceâ. Your experience section is the perfect place to back your skills up with real-life examples of when you have used your skills, in addition to the results you have achieved. When writing your experience section, give specific details about where, when, and with whom you have used your skills. When possible, use numbers and metrics to quantify your achievements. Example of how to list skills in the experience section of a resume: How to List Skills On A Resume Finding Relevant Skills For You To figure out what skills you should include on your resume, follow these three simple steps. Step #1: Create a master list of skills Go through each category and create a master list of the skills in your toolbox. Donât be afraid to list things that seem obvious, like computer skills or customer service. Although they might seem like a given in your profession, many hiring managers still want to see these skills listed. Never include skills that you are no longer familiar with. If you write a skill on your resume, hiring managers will be expecting that you can deliver on that activity. If you are worried that a hiring manager will over or underestimate your level of proficiency, feel free to write âbeginnerâ, âintermediateâ, or âproficientâ next to each skill listed. Step #2: Figure out the skills needed for the job When applying for jobs, it is important to identify the set of skills that are needed. Picking out the needed skills will help you determine if you are a good fit for the role. It will also help you tailor your resume skills to the specific job you are applying for. There are two main ways to determine the skills needed for a job. The first is to dissect job descriptions and job postings that are posted on career websites and job boards. To do this, go through a job description and highlight each quality that describes the candidate the company is looking for. For example, here is a job posting for a cashier position: Then create a list of all the qualities described, making sure to write each skill using the same wording that is used in the job posting. Problem Solving Customer Assistance Trust Teamwork Positive Team Relationships Relationship Building MS Windows Operating System iOS Android Operating System Communication Interpersonal Skills Multi-Tasking Accountability Initiative Ownership The second way to figure out what skills are needed for a job is to search for people on LinkedIn who are already performing the role. By searching for a certain job title in the search bar, you can find a list of professionals who are already in that job and then search through their profile to see what skills they have listed, both in their summary and experience sections. Step #3: Match your master list with the skills needed for a job The skills you write on your resume should be whatever overlaps between your master list and the list of skills you created from researching jobs. By using this technique, you will be making sure that the skills you have listed on your resume are relevant to the jobs you are applying for. A general rule of thumb is to never include skills that arenât important for the job you are applying for. For example, if you are applying for a project manager position, there is no need to list that you know yoga or CPR. Top 50+ Skills Hiring Managers Look For On Resumes A lot of research has been done as to what hiring managers look for on a resume. Important Differences Between FERS and CSRS
Important Differences Between FERS and CSRS Important Differences Between FERS and CSRS The U.S. government maintains two retirement systems for its employees- the Federal Employees Retirement System and the Civil Service Retirement System. Retirement systems are common at all levels of government. Employees, and often employers as well, contribute money to the employeesâ retirement funds and retirees draw monthly income from the system. There are several significant differences between these two systems. CSRS Is No Longer an Option All federal workers had the option to convert from CSRS to FERS when FERS was first created in 1987. Now all federal employees are automatically enrolled in FERS- they dont have the choice of electing CSRS instead. It is not to say that no federal employees have CSRS, however. CSRS is still available to federal workers who were in the CSRS system before 1987 and who chose to remain with CSRS in lieu of switching to FERS at that time. Their benefits were not terminated with the introduction of FERS. FERS is intended to fully succeed CSRS when the CSRS beneficiaries eventually die off. One Component Vs. Three Components CSRS was established on January 1, 1920, and its a classic pension plan similar to those established during the same time period among labor unions and large companies. Employees contribute a certain percentage of their pay. When they retire, they receive an annuity sufficient to maintain a standard of living similar to what they experienced during their working years. Assuming the worker has at least 30 years in federal service, the CSRS benefit is generally sufficient to provide a comfortable lifestyle even without Social Security or any retirement savings. Its indexed for inflation. A FERS employee has a smaller pension, one not intended to fully fund his retirement on its own. He also gets a thrift savings plan and Social Security to fund his retirement in addition to the pension program. The thrift savings plan is similar to a 401(k) so its possible that a FERS employee can come up short in retirement if she doesnt handle the plan efficiently. But having the TSP gives FERS employees more control over and flexibility with their retirement plans. FERS workers typically retire with double the savings that CSRS workers accumulate, although CSRS employees do have superior pension benefits. Cost of Living Adjustments Older employees who have had CSRS received cost of living adjustments from the start. The FERS adjustment is stingier and not available until the employee reaches age 62. The COLA is equivalent to that given to military retirees and Social Security recipients. Disability Benefits Its generally accepted that the FERS plan has the edge here, at least for employees who have passed 18 months of service. Benefits are slightly greater and, of course, CSRS employees are not generally entitled to Social Security disability because they dont have sufficient Social Security credits. Survivor Benefits Survivors of CSRS employees are entitled to survivor benefits of 55 percent of the initial unreduced CSRS benefit. It drops to 50 percent for FERS survivors- after a 10 percent reduction. FERS survivors would typically receive Social Security survivor benefits as well, however, and would presumably inherit the balance remaining in the thrift savings plans as well. The Size of Annuity Payments Because FERS has three components, these components each offer retirees less money. The annuity payment for CSRS retirees is designed to be their only income whereas FERS retirees have the annuity, the thrift savings plan, and Social Security benefits. Thrift Savings Plan Rules The U.S. government contributes an amount equal to 1 percent of each FERS employeeâs contribution to his thrift savings account. FERS employees can contribute more, and the U.S. government will match those contributions up to a certain percentage. CSRS employees can participate in the thrift savings plan, but they receive no additional money from the federal government if they elect to do so. That 1 percent helps the government to ensure that FERS employees achieve a retirement thats comparable to that of CSRS employees. Its vested after three years of service, and it does not automatically close upon retirement, forcing a transfer of funds. The Amount Taken from Salaries CSRS employees contribute between 7 and 9 percent of their salaries to the system, and FERS employees contribute a comparable amount when Social Security is factored in. Federal employees hired before or during 2012 contribute 8 percent, and employees hired after 2012 contribute 3.1 percent. The Social Security tax rate, also called Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance or OASDI, is 5.3 percent. FERS employees can contribute more if they choose by using the thrift savings plan. Earliest Retirement Age CSRS employees can retire as young as 55 years of age, but FERS employees who began their careers during or after 1970 must wait until age 57. Older FERS employees can retire a little earlier depending on when they began their careers. The Bottom Line Its no longer really necessary to weigh all these pros and cons now that you can no longer elect CSRS benefits. It can help you to plan your retirement a bit more effectively, however, if youre passing 30 years of service but not ready to retire quite yet.
